Custom leather goods prices, and how leatherworkers price their work
Custom leather is priced from three things: the leather and hardware, the hours of cutting, stitching and edge work, and the maker's markup. Here is a published pricing example, the selling fees leatherworkers compare, and what moves the price.
How a leatherworker prices a wallet (published example)
| Step | Example |
|---|---|
| Materials (leather, thread, edge finish) | $9 |
| Labour: 30 minutes at $20 per hour | $10 |
| Wholesale price: (materials + labour) × 2 | $38 |
| Retail price: wholesale × 2 | $76 |

What moves the price
- Leather — Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather costs more than corrected-grain or bonded leather, and named tannery leathers cost more again. Thickness, measured in ounces (1 oz ≈ 0.4 mm), matters too: belts need thick leather, wallets thin.
- Hand or machine stitching — Hand saddle stitching with two needles is slower than machine stitching and is often chosen for its strength and look. It is one of the biggest time costs in a small piece.
- Edge finishing — Beveled, sanded, dyed and burnished edges take time, layer after layer. Painted edges on chrome-tanned leather are a different process again.
- Personalisation — A blind-stamped monogram is quick; hand tooling and carving take hours; laser engraving is quick per piece once the artwork is set up.
- Hardware — Solid brass or stainless buckles, rivets, snaps and zips cost more than plated ones and last longer.
- Size and pattern — A bag uses far more leather and hours than a card holder. A new pattern drawn just for you costs more than a maker's existing design.
- Quantity and deadline — Groomsmen gifts and corporate orders share pattern and setup time, so each extra piece costs less. A tight date is a rush job and usually costs more.
How to brief a leatherworker (paste this into your post)
- What it is: wallet, card holder, belt, watch strap, bag, apron, tool roll, knife sheath or something else.
- Sizes: number of card slots, waist size and belt width, wrist size and lug width, or the knife's blade length and handle shape (trace it).
- Leather type and colour if you know them, or 'open to suggestions'.
- Stitching: hand or machine, and thread colour.
- Personalisation: initials, a logo or artwork to stamp, tool or laser engrave, with exact spelling.
- Hardware finish: brass, nickel, black or stainless.
- Photos of pieces you like.
- Quantity, the date you need it, and your delivery address.
- Budget range. Leatherworkers bid better against a real number.
